AI Search Statistics
For Local Businesses

Published July 29, 2026 | Instrument run: | 2,560 recorded AI answers

Most pages ranking for "AI search statistics" recycle the same national surveys. This page is different: every headline number here is primary data L3ad measured itself, by recording what ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude actually answer when someone asks for a local business, across 16 Florida cities. Third-party national numbers appear only in a clearly labeled context section at the bottom.

TL;DR

Yes, people now ask AI assistants for local businesses, and it changes who gets found. In L3ad's June 2026 measurement of 2,560 AI answers across 16 Florida cities, the four major assistants agreed on the same top pick in only 1 city, and the Google review leader appeared in just 28% of answers.

How Often Do AI Assistants Agree on the Best Local Business?

1

In L3ad's June 2026 measurement of 2,560 recorded AI answers across 16 Florida cities, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude named the same number-one roofing pick in only 1 of 16 cities.

The one exception was Cape Coral. Everywhere else, the "best" local business depends on which assistant you ask. There is no single AI search result to win. There are at least four, and they disagree.

2

Asking four AI assistants for the best roofer in a Florida city produced an average of 2.9 different number-one answers per city in L3ad's June 2026 measurement.

Out of a possible 4 different answers, the average city produced 2.9. A business owner who checks only ChatGPT is seeing roughly a quarter of the picture.

3

In 3 of the 16 Florida cities L3ad measured in June 2026 (Miami Beach, Fort Myers, Pensacola), all four AI assistants named a different number-one business.

Full disagreement: four assistants, four different winners. In markets like these, AI visibility is genuinely up for grabs, because no business has locked in the answer yet.

Does Having the Most Google Reviews Get You Recommended by AI?

4

Across 16 Florida cities in June 2026, the local business with the most Google reviews appeared in an average of just 28% of L3ad's 2,560 recorded AI answers.

Reviews are the most visible trust signal in traditional local search. In AI answers, the review leader is absent from nearly three out of four responses on average. Reviews still matter; they are just no longer enough on their own.

5

In 2 of the 16 Florida cities L3ad measured in June 2026, the Google review leader was named by none of the four major AI assistants.

In Orlando, the review leader holds 1,626 Google reviews and was named by zero assistants. In Key West, the leader holds 535 reviews and was also named by zero. The review leader was named by all four assistants in only 8 of 16 cities.

6

In L3ad's June 2026 Melbourne, Florida measurement, the market's Google review leader (1,765 reviews) surfaced in roughly 1% of recorded AI answers.

The most-reviewed business L3ad measured anywhere in the study, a Fort Lauderdale roofer with 3,094 Google reviews, was named by only two of the four assistants and appeared in 15% of that city's AI answers.

7

The strongest consensus L3ad measured in June 2026 was Cape Coral, where the Google review leader appeared in 83% of recorded AI answers, followed by Gainesville at 74%.

Alignment between reviews and AI visibility is possible. It is just rare: only those two cities out of 16 cleared 60%.

Where Do AI Assistants Find Local Businesses to Recommend?

8

L3ad analyzed 2,091 source citations produced by AI assistants recommending Florida roofers in June 2026; review directories (Angi, Yelp, BBB, Google) and the businesses' own websites dominated.

The assistants do not invent names. They pull them from sources they cite. In the three Space Coast markets we analyzed in depth, the most-cited review surfaces were:

MarketReview surfaces AI cited most
TitusvilleAngi (50), Yelp (20), BBB (16), Google (14)
MelbourneAngi (32), Yelp (28), Google (14), BBB (6)
OrlandoYahoo Local (57), Google (40), Yelp (12), BBB (5)

A business missing from these directories gives the assistant nothing to pull, so it recommends someone else. The full source breakdown is in The State of Roofing Search in Florida (2026). The July 2026 plumbing run confirmed the pattern statewide with Yelp on top (604 citations to Angi's 342); see The State of Plumbing Search in Florida (2026).

What Do the Businesses AI Recommends Have in Common?

9

83% of the Florida roofers AI assistants recommended in L3ad's June 2026 measurement carry LocalBusiness structured data on their websites.

We crawled the sites of the recommended businesses in the three Space Coast markets. Nearly all show a phone number and address in plain sight, and per-market schema adoption among winners ran 70% (Titusville), 89% (Melbourne), and 90% (Orlando). The businesses AI names look, in code and on the page, exactly like what a real local business is supposed to look like.

10

Only 17% of the AI-recommended Florida roofers in L3ad's June 2026 measurement expose their star rating inside their structured data.

This is the open gap. Even the winners mostly skip aggregateRating markup. A business that adds it is doing something most of its AI-recommended competitors are not, and handing the assistants a number they can quote.

11

The Florida businesses AI assistants recommended in L3ad's June 2026 measurement average between 4.8 and 5.0 stars on their visible review profiles.

Rating quality is the signal the directories and the assistants share. High ratings alone do not guarantee a recommendation (see stat 4), but we did not find AI winners with weak ratings.

How Does AI Visibility Compare to the Real Market?

12

L3ad's June 2026 ground-truth pull from the Google Places API recorded 315 operating roofing businesses across the same 16 Florida cities, with a median of 114 Google reviews and a 4.8 average rating.

This is the market the AI answers are drawing from, measured directly rather than assumed. About 44% of those 315 businesses hold fewer than 100 Google reviews, and 11 of them (3.5%) have no website at all, which makes them nearly impossible for an AI assistant to confirm and recommend.

13

In L3ad's June 2026 Titusville measurement, ChatGPT's top pick appeared in 35 of 40 recorded answers while Claude's top pick was a different business named in 20 of 40.

Per-assistant leads flip like this in most cities. Melbourne was the rare market where one business (DC Roofing) was recommended prominently by all four assistants. The per-assistant tables for three markets are in How AI Assistants Recommend Florida Roofers (Q2 2026).

How We Measured This

A frozen set of 8 local-intent roofing prompts ("best roofer in [city], FL" and similar) was run 5 times each against the ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude APIs with live web search or grounding enabled, across 16 Florida cities. That is 40 answers per assistant per city, 2,560 recorded answers total, collected June 2026. Every answer was saved verbatim with its timestamp and model version, and the recommended businesses were extracted from the records.

Ground truth: a Google Places API pull of the operating roofing businesses in the same 16 cities (315 businesses with review counts and ratings). Citation analysis covers 2,091 source citations. Site signals come from crawling the recommended businesses' homepages for structured data and contact information.

Honest limits: this is one trade (roofing) in one quarter, measured through assistant APIs rather than the consumer apps, and Google's AI Overviews have no API and are not measured here. Claude exposes no citations and Gemini proxies its citation URLs, so the source analysis is built from ChatGPT and Grok, the two assistants that reveal real source domains. A measured sample, not a census. The method is what scales.

Third-Party Research for Context

The statistics below come from named third-party studies, not from L3ad's measurements. We list them for national context on how many people encounter AI in local search, and we keep them separate from our findings on purpose: they answer a different question (usage and exposure) than our instrument does (what the AI answers actually say).

AI Search Statistics FAQ

How many people use AI search to find local businesses?

No public study measures this at the individual-city level, so treat any precise number with care. Third-party national research gives directional context: WebFX's July 2025 study of 237,990 US home-service queries found Google AI Overviews appearing on 17.7% of them, and BrightLocal's 2025 survey reports 80% of US consumers search for local businesses weekly. L3ad measures the other side of the equation: what AI assistants actually answer when people ask, recorded across 2,560 AI answers in 16 Florida cities in June 2026.

Do AI assistants agree on which local business is best?

Rarely. In L3ad's June 2026 measurement of 2,560 recorded AI answers across 16 Florida cities, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude named the same number-one local pick in only 1 of 16 cities, and averaged 2.9 different number-one answers per city.

Do Google reviews still matter for AI search?

They matter, but they are no longer enough. In L3ad's June 2026 measurement, the business with the most Google reviews in each of 16 Florida cities appeared in an average of just 28% of AI answers, and in 2 cities the review leader was named by none of the four assistants.

How does a local business show up in AI search results?

Three measured factors separate the businesses AI assistants recommend: presence on the review directories the assistants cite (Angi, Yelp, BBB, Google), LocalBusiness structured data on their own site (83% of AI-recommended Florida roofers have it), and strong ratings (the recommended businesses average 4.8 to 5.0 stars). Only 17% expose their rating in structured data, which is an open gap.

Where does this data come from?

From L3ad's Florida Local Search Index AI-visibility instrument: a frozen set of 8 local-intent prompts run 5 times each against the ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude APIs with live web search or grounding enabled, across 16 Florida cities in June 2026, with every answer recorded verbatim. Ground truth comes from a Google Places API pull of 315 operating roofing businesses in the same cities. Full methodology is published.
