Alt Text

A text description added to an image's HTML that tells search engines and screen readers what the image shows. Also called alternative text or alt attributes.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Alt text is one of the easiest SEO wins most businesses miss. Every image without alt text is a missed opportunity to tell Google what your page is about. And with Google Image Search driving significant traffic, well-described images can bring in customers you'd otherwise never reach.

For Space Coast service businesses, alt text also matters for accessibility. Florida businesses serving the public benefit from ADA-friendly websites, and proper alt text is a core accessibility requirement.

How It Works

Alt text serves three critical functions:

Bad alt text: IMG_4582.jpg or photo or image of our work

Good alt text: Licensed electrician installing new panel box in Cape Canaveral FL home

The good version describes the image, includes the service, and naturally mentions the location, all in a conversational way.

Common questions
FAQ

Tap a question to expand.

How long should alt text be?
Keep it under 125 characters. Screen readers cut off after that. Be descriptive but concise. 'Plumber fixing copper pipes under kitchen sink in Titusville home' is better than 'image1.jpg' or a keyword-stuffed paragraph.
Should I put keywords in alt text?
Yes, but naturally. Describe the image accurately and include your keyword if it fits. 'Emergency roof repair after storm damage in Cocoa Beach FL' is good. 'Roof repair roofing roofer Cocoa Beach FL best roofer' is keyword stuffing.
Do decorative images need alt text?
Decorative images (borders, spacers, background patterns) should have empty alt text (alt='') so screen readers skip them. Only add descriptive alt text to images that convey meaningful content.
