What is a citation and why consistency matters
A citation is any place on the internet that mentions your business name, address, and phone number — usually called NAP. Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, BBB, industry directories, chamber-of-commerce listings: each of these is a citation. When the NAP across them is identical character-for-character, search engines treat it as confirmation that your business is real and trusted. When it varies — even by a missing comma in the address or 'St' versus 'Street' — search engines deduct confidence and your local-pack ranking suffers.
The most common citation problems we find
- Phone number formats: (321) 555-1234 vs 321-555-1234 vs +13215551234
- Suite numbers missing on some listings, spelled differently on others
- Outdated address from a previous office still active on aggregators like Acxiom or Localeze
- Business name with or without LLC / Inc / DBA suffix
- Apostrophes and commas — 'Joe's Plumbing, LLC' versus 'Joes Plumbing LLC'
How the check works
We look up your business across the 30 most influential directories for local search and compare the NAP each one displays. Inconsistencies are flagged with the exact mismatch and the directory it came from. The output is sorted by directory authority — fixing a mismatch on Google or Apple Maps moves the needle far more than fixing one on a niche industry directory.
What to do once you have the report
Pick a single canonical NAP (the version on your Google Business Profile is usually the right anchor). Update each flagged directory to match exactly. The high-authority directories (Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook, Yelp) are the ones that move local-pack rankings most; the smaller ones still help, but the marginal lift drops quickly. Plan to re-check every 90 days because data aggregators sometimes overwrite manual fixes.
